Sistine Chapel ceiling

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is a monumental masterpiece of High Renaissance art, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 while standing on specially designed scaffolding high above the chapel floor. The vast, intricately detailed fresco features over 300 figures and vividly depicts nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, most famously the iconic Creation of Adam, where the fingers of God and humanity reach out to nearly touch.

Pietà

Michelangelo’s Pietà, carved in 1499 from a single block of flawless Carrara marble when the artist was only 24 years old, is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture. Housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, the breathtakingly lifelike statue depicts a remarkably youthful Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Jesus, and it remains the only piece of art Michelangelo ever signed, carving his name directly across the sash on Mary’s chest.
