Zelný Trh

Zelný trh

Zelný trh, known historically as the Cabbage Market, is one of Brno’s oldest and most vibrant squares, having hosted a bustling daily farmer’s market where locals buy fresh produce for over 800 years. The square is dominated by the monumental, highly ornate Baroque Parnassus Fountain in its center, and beneath the cobblestones lies a fascinating labyrinth of medieval cellars that were once used to keep the merchants food cold.

Parnassus Fountain

The Parnassus Fountain, dominating the center of Brno’s Zelný trh, is a monumental and highly dramatic Baroque masterpiece designed in the late 17th century by the brilliant architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Carved to resemble a wild, rocky cave, it features intricate mythological statues of Hercules, Cerberus, and allegorical figures representing ancient empires, all standing above a sprawling pool of water.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The striking, modern sculpture of a youthful Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by Kurt Gebauer outside the Reduta Theatre on Zelný trh, commemorating the musical genius’s visit to Brno. Unveiled in 2008, the statue celebrates the historic moment in 1767 when an eleven-year-old Mozart, fleeing a smallpox epidemic in Vienna, performed an incredibly well-received concert for the city’s nobility in that very theatre.
